ABOUT HELLENIC PHYCOLOGICAL SOCIETY

Hellenic Phycological Society (HELPS) was founded in 1991, by a group of phycologists from the Universities of Thessaloniki and Athens, as well as from the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR). The constitution of the Society was approved by the Court on 15 April 1991, when it began to officially function.

The discussions on the foundation of the Society had already begun since 1990, as a response to the proposal of European phycologists and particularly Professor Michael Melkonian (University of Cologne) for the foundation of a European Federation of Phycological Societies. The first proposal was made by Chris Katsaros in a meeting of the Greek Phycologists in Thessaloniki on 8-9 June 1990 (in the frames of COST 48).

Professor M. Melkonian, who was invited in this meeting, developed his opinions for the foundation of the Federation and suggested us to found either a separate Phycological Society or a Phycological Section within the already existing Hellenic Botanical Society (HBS). After that, Prof. I. Tsekos and Prof. S. Haritonidis, who were among the founders of the Society, participated in a related meeting that took place on 7 March 1991 in Germany.

The aims of the Society, as it is reported in the constitution, are “the promotion of the basic and applied phycological research, the organization of congresses and the development of international relationships”. In other words, the development of Phycology in Greece, and the appointment of its advantages, the communication and exchange of opinions between Greek Phycologists, as well as the cooperation with other phycologists in the world. Moreover, the promotion and growth of Phycological Education in Schools and Universities, in order to help the young Greek Phycologists to work in a better scientific and professional environment and further develop Phycology in Greece, in both basic and applied research.

HELPS, despite the small number of members (due to the small number of Phycologists in Greece), developed important activity, with scientific meetings, either alone (Educational Phycology Symposiums) or in cooperation with the Hellenic Botanical Society (HBS).
